The Jewish Ten Commandments

The Ten Commandments were given to Moses in the wilderness. Because of this many say that the Commandments are Jewish. While this is a common saying, the Jews are not mentioned in the Bible until II Kings 16:6. For more information concerning the Jewish Ten Commandments, see a list of them.

The Septuagint is the oldest Old Testament we have. It is a greek version of the Old Testament that was beginning to be translated around 285 BC. The Masoretic Text was not published until around 1050 AD. The Septuagint predates the Jewish Masoretic Text by at least 1000 years. There are manuscripts of the Septuagint from the 4th century AD. Most Bibles today, such as the KJV, NASB, and NIV, translate the Old Testament from the Jewish Masoretic text. However, the Septuagint is superior to the Masoretic text. It lists the Ten Commandments in a slightly different order than the Masoretic.

Here is what the Bible says about teaching the Ten Commandments to your

children:

Deuteronomy 6: 7

And thou shalt teach them deligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest in the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou riset up.

And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.

How can we be sure that Deuteronomy 6: 7, 8, and 9 are talking about the Ten Commandments? First of all, the Ten Commandments are given in their entirety in the preceding chapter (Chapter 5). Chapter 6 begins by letting us know that the subject of the chapter is the Ten Commandments.

Verse one begins: "Now these are the commandments". Verse 2 continues the main thought, "to keep all his statues and commandments". The focus of this chapter is on the Ten Commandments as they are refered to several times. Verse 17: "Ye shall diligently keep the commandments"

Conclusion: A major focus of our teaching of our children every day should be on the Ten Commandments. Furthermore, the only passage of scripture we are required to post in our homes is the Ten Commandments, verse 9: "And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house" If the written words of the Ten Commandments are constantly before us, we can learn them and obey them. Our forefathers have taken this command seriously and posted them in public places more than 2800 throughout the United States. No other scripture verse is posted as often as the Ten Commandments. Don't let the enemy cause us to disobey, we must keep them up in out homes and in public places.
